Davis & Sanford MAGNUMGR Magnum Grounder Tripod Customer Review
Probably one of the toughest decisions a photographer has to make is the purchase of a tripod. As a photo hobbyist on a tight budget, i had a tough time choosing between the more expensive Manfrottos and this model from a lesser known name – Davis and Sanford. I must say that its pretty surprising how sturdy this tripod is. The specs are a close match to the Manfrotto 190XPROB, although bear in mind, this is not a replacement for that model. I never tried the latter, but it is one of the most recommended professional tripods.
The construction is tank-like, very sturdy and can be extended to a decent height – 56″ w/o the center column extended – which is a convenient height for me. The pan-tilt head is pretty good, although there is a minor concern in the way the pan and tilt handles fit into the grooves. When my shipment arrived, i could see some metal filings hanging out of these grooves, so i am not sure if its a manufacturing defect or if its the shipping that is to be blamed! Apart from that, the handles work just fine. This tripod is heavy and can handle light winds without any concerns about instability. I always hang my lowepro bag on the center column to add to the weight and this way its pretty stable even if there is a slightly stronger wind. Its a joy to setup the tripod, especially with the flip locks on the legs and the quick release plate.
I use a Nikon D40 with 18-55mm/55-200mm lenses for my work, which occasionally involves long exposures at night . So the bottom line is, if you have a heavy wallet, go for the Manfrottos/gitzos – I might buy one myself over time – but if you are on a budget then this is a great compromise! Recommended for beginners/amateurs.
